Description: This layer depicts the current extent of the Maryland-Washington Metropolitan District, as defined in Annotated Code 1957, Article 28, Section 3-102 and Section 3-106 through 3-107, 7-103, amended (Section 3-101 repealed) by Chapter 426 Section 1, from House Bill 1290, Acts of 2012, last amended by Chapter 500 of House Bill 1123 of 2016 (see: MD Code, Land Use, § 19-102). The Commission is empowered under State law to acquire, develop, maintain and administer a regional system of parks in a defined Metropolitan District (see: Commission Authority, page 10). The Metropolitan District within Prince George's County as defined by State Law includes all of the county aside from Election Districts 4 and 8 as of July 1, 1966, the City of District Heights as of July 1, 1995, the City of Laurel as of July 1, 1997, and the City of Greenbelt as of July 1, 2016. Property subsequently annexed by these cities remains within the Metropolitan District and is included in the assessable base for the Park Fund portion of the M-NCPPC tax rate (see: Park Fund, page 13). Each alteration of the Metropolitan District has been accomplished by statute - its boundaries do not automatically change when municipal boundaries change (see: OAG Opinion No. 95-048). Similarly, subsequent changes to election district boundaries do not affect the extent of the Metropolitan District (see: OAG Opinion No. 94-034). This layer is suitable for presentation at a scale of 1:12,000. Boundaries are shown in their approximate location. This coverage is not suitable for the identification of individual parcels.
